Under the Building Healthy Communities, Boyle Heights (BHC-BH) collaborative, The Wall Las Memorias (TWLM) works to advocate for policy and systems change to combat issues such as health care inequality, access to mental health in Boyle Heights and to leave sustainable lasting impacts in our communities.
Boyle Heights is one of the poorest areas in Los Angeles County with over 60% of its inhabitants living below the poverty line and with an area median income of only $18,000. In addition, community members in this neighborhood work in low-wage industries that provide little to no employment-based health care services. Approximately 20% of the area’s population is undocumented which has led to serious cascading repercussions for community members who live in the shadow of fear and isolation.
As BHC-BH community partners, TWLM is the co-anchor of the Health Happens with Prevention campaign which brings together passionate individuals who are grounded in the Boyle Heights community and combat issues related to health care inequality, access to mental health treatment and addressing barriers among communities of color.
>> Linkage to Healthcare Coverage - All programs at TWLM offer linkages and warm connections to appropriate general health and mental health care, including referrals to healthcare coverage such as My Health LA and Medi-Cal.
>> Community Engagement - TWLM continues its mission of building the next generation of leadership through various educational activities for community members at large. Our Boyle Heights specific events include workshops on health prevention and awareness, advocacy, leadership development, and mental health stigma reduction.
